Indonesia

Indonesia

Wonderful Indonesia. This official slogan is correct, as Indonesia is truly wonderful. Perhaps an even better slogan would be: Unforgettable Indonesia. Because travelling throughout the country or living there for some time will provide you with many memorable and joyful experiences.

Indonesia is the largest archipelago on the planet. With a population over 240 million as the fourth most populous country in the world and covering 18,000 islands, it should come to no one’s surprise that Indonesia is filled with wonder. From the immense amount of dense tropical jungles that are home to a huge variety of wildlife to the pristine white-sand beaches, the coral reefs teeming with marine life, the entertainment and shopping possibilities in Jakarta, the party and mystical island of Bali, and a diverse range of cultures and peoples this is a country worth visiting and exploring. Not to mention the delicious and yummy various local Indonesian foods that can be found throughout the cities and villages in this archipelago.

Unfortunately, the country is not without its hitches either. Deforestation across many islands happens at an alarming rate, there is poverty throughout the land, and corruption is found from the highest to the lowest levels of society affecting the health and progress of many Indonesians. You need only to open an Indonesian newspaper to see the seriousness of this problem.

Indonesia’s history is tumultuous; it struggled with various Javanese Kingdoms fighting for supremacy of Java, centuries of Dutch colonization and a battle for independence, which was followed by military coups, murder, the transition to democracy, and modernizing, while trying to keep traditional cultures and customs in tact. Indonesia is booming and transforming at an incredible speed. Hopefully it will not lose sight of where it came from and what it was.

Ok, I admit it that the last paragraph sounds a bit too dramatic, but for me it is true. Indonesia is a spectacular country with a rich and complicated history and one of the most beautiful lands I have visited in my life and on this website I’d like to share some stories, photos, and experiences I have collected over the years. So, I hope you will enjoy this journey through Indonesia complete with tales and pictures.
